What The Countess doesn't do (and cannot do) is respond to, answer or address the accusations Bathory ever bathed in blood. Bathory beats them and many of them die, and we get a unique insight during all of this with privileged access to her - albeit fictionalised - thoughts. Johns paints a clear picture of the responsibilities of a Countess to run several households and the disappointment and betrayal Bathory feels when her maidservants steal from her or sleep with her husband. We see her mature from a young girl and face fear, self-doubt, loneliness, love, heartbreak, loss, grief, anger and frustration. Johns takes us through Bathory's childhood growing up in a noble family in 16th Century Hungary, and walks us through her life in a first person narrative. Author Rebecca Johns attempts to address this in her fictionalised account of Elizabeth Bathory's life in her historical novel The Countess.

The details of her personal life during that time are hardly less private, having provided fodder for gossips in several countries.Īs is so often the case in the career of this illustrious woman, the public story is far from complete. Her discoveries there are the stuff of romantic legend, catapulting her from scholarly obscurity to worldwide fame. Even those who take no interest in the field of dragon naturalism have heard of Lady Trent’s expedition to the inhospitable deserts of Akhia. So, why not travel the way I've always traveled best? Through books. It has been far too long since I've had a good road trip, and I am determined to see all 50 states of this still-beautiful nation before I die.īut, despite my itch, my reality has informed me that I'm not going anywhere. Last summer, as I realized yet again that a road trip across America would not take place (due in part to First Daughter's chronic car sickness and the same daughter's inability to spend 5 minutes in a contained space with Second Daughter), I went into a funk. And just when it appears things can't get any worse, Amy's sexuality begins to unfold, causing a vast and icy rift between mother and daughter that will remain unbridgeable unless Isabelle examines her own secretive and shameful past.Ī Reader's Guide is included in the paperback edition of this powerful first novel by the author who brought Olive Kitteridge to millions of readers. That they eat, sleep, and work side by side in the gossip-ridden mill town of Shirley Falls-a location fans of Strout will recognize from her critically acclaimed novel, The Burgess Boys-only increases the tension. In most ways, Isabelle and Amy are like any mother and her 16-year-old daughter, a fierce mix of love and loathing exchanged in their every glance. Pulitzer Prize winning author Elizabeth Strout’s bestselling and award winning debut, Amy and Isabelle-adapted for television by Oprah Winfrey- evokes a teenager's alienation from her distant mother-and a parent's rage at the discovery of her daughter's sexual secrets. Isabel and Will are well-developed and endearing characters. Through it all, I wholly rooted for this couple and hoped for their happy ending! Many obstacles, both internal and external, stand in their way, including the mystery of the pendants, societal expectations, and Will’s past. Their connection is strong from the start, and as they travel and have adventures together, their bond only deepens. Years later, they meet again when Will is commissioned to find Isobel and bring her back home. I absolutely adored Will and Isabel’s love story! They first met when they were young, and Will rescued Isabel after witnessing the brutal murder of her traveling companions. Why must Isabel return home, and will the pendants that Will and Isabel share help them figure out why their lives are at risk? However, the closer Will and Isabel get to her home, and to each other, the more dangerous their journey becomes. Will is determined to atone for his past and knows this last task of finding and bringing Isabel home is his chance. Her Banished Knight’s Redemption is a wonderful historical romance that follows Isabel and Will as they travel to reunite Isabel with her family. But most of the songs are first or second take. Axl’s vocals are what took the longest, because he’s a perfectionist: some of the vocals, he’d record one word at a time. He’s like… I don’t want to say Dracula, but he likes his space. We’d sleep all afternoon, go record, then go out and party.”Īll except Axl: “He’d do his parts by himself. Our guitar players, they’d fiddle-faddle every once in a while. I was a big pot smoker, a little alcohol… but heroin around the band during Appetite? I’m telling you, none. “We were young guys, and had nothing but parties and pussy on our minds, but when it came to going in that studio, everybody straightened their ass up. When it came to recording, Adler insists they lived a dual existence. Slash has previously described songs like Mr Brownstone as being written “at the height of our chemical bliss”. You’re living on the streets, you got nothing… Thank God we had strippers! Because strippers make great money, and if you’ve seven or eight of them on your side, that’s a lot of money. It was just the five of us, our crazy friends, and all the crazy experiences. “The songs were everything we’d lived though,” says Adler. ‘’ It is a state of connectedness with something immeasurable and indestructible, something that almost paradoxically, is essential you and yet is much greater than you. One is enlightened when you feel oneness with Being. in other words: ‘ ’Being is accessible to you as your own deepest self, your true nature.’’ in the book he suggests not to understand Being, because Being is to be felt rather than to understand mentally. he states that Being is your presence and that it has immediate access to you as the feeling of your own presence. he explains that Being is an open concept and that it is impossible to form an image of it. In *practicing the power of now* eckhart tolle explains that there is an ‘’ eternal, ever present One Life beyond the myriad forms of life that are subject to birth and death.’’ some denote this as God, but tolle calls it Being. do you want to become mindfull? then this is a great book to begin with! he helps to look at our emotions from a distance, rather get sucked in it. Practicing the power of now by eckhart tolle is an eye-opener: it initiates a new way of observing life and especially our thoughts. Like the game "clue" each opponent has a different type of weapon that is supplied. The premises is the same where "there can only be one" but the story is much more gruesome. I picked this book up because I heard it was like Hunger games. Even if the other kids are dying, most people/kids think they will be the exception. Probably has to do with all the hormones running through their bodies. Yes there is the teenage crushes going on but the kids are 15, they usually don't have much else on their mind. This is a very dark book in that the scenes are bloody and I think it makes it worse that they were all friends and schoolmates. The narrator was good, I thought he had a clear voice with a slight Asian accent. Of course it didn't hurt that the kids all had numbers next to their names. I know some of the descriptions are cliché, but that is how the author wrote them. I finally found a print out and wrote notes next to the name with a brief character description, this helped me keep all the characters straight. This book was good, but I will admit I had a hard time with the names. Billott’s work eventually leads to a massive study of the residents of Parkersburg, West Virginia that finds a clear link between PFOA exposure from drinking water and numerous health conditions, including kidney cancer, ulcerative colitis, and thyroid disease. Billott begins investigating the waste at the site, uncovering DuPont’s own internal research on a chemical called PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid), which was used to make water- and stain-repellent finishes in Teflon pans, furniture, and carpeting. Tennant’s cows began dropping dead after chemical company DuPont built a landfill upstream on the creek that the livestock drank from. In the film Dark Waters, corporate lawyer Robert Billott takes on an unusual client: West Virginia farmer Wilbur Tennant.
